School lunches are in the bag this year!

Grade 8To say that I’m excited for this school year is an understatement. After last year, having a 12 year old drop out mid Grade 7… and a failed attempt at teaching him for the remainder of the school year at home… the only direction you can take is up.

One way we decided to make this year a little easier on me, the above mentioned child is going to private school and I am training him to pack his own Back-to-School lunches! While I would love to have completely packed bags lined up by the front door the night before, I’m not dying on that mountain. The morning rush will suffice.

After child #3 has made his own lunch and is out the door. I turn my focus to my last little munchkin. If I let him pack his own school lunch, it would consist of crackers, cheese, chocolate and popcorn. Add a little bit of wine and that’s my Friday night at home…

To be honest, I’m not much more creative than he is. I tend to stick with the same basics each and every day, year after year and my oldest is in Grade 12… that’s a lot of dull lunches!!

My Dad ROCKED it when it came to making lunches. In the days when we COULD have PB & J, we never did. We always had the most gourmet sandwiches; I remember having to open my mouth wide to get a good bite and I have a BIG mouth!

I frequently scour various websites for ideas and found on Kraft Canada a lunch idea kid #4 would enjoy and possibly even make for himself, they’re all his favourite foods, Cracker Stackers with Veggie “Noodles”!

I know my limitations. I’m not the Pinterest mom with perfect bento boxes with perfect bento lunches but I do use a few handy hacks to help me survive the school year…

  • I love cookie cutters. I use a cutter in the shape of a star or a moon or even a bat. My youngest thinks it’s cool to open up his school lunch to see his meat and cheese done up in funky shapes.
  • Crinkle cutters rock! I cut up cucumbers and carrots, they look like crinkle fries and they hold more dip!
  • I have a dedicated cupboard for all the snacks for school. Makes it easy on the ones still in lunch-making training.
  • We use our thermoses almost daily in the cold months. My kids love hot leftovers like spaghetti and soup.
  • Embarrass them. Every once in a while I include a little “I love you” note. They pretend they’re embarrassed but secretly they love it, they really do! :)
I’m so thankful to be a part of Kraft Canada What’s Cooking Ambassadorship. I love the new recipes I get to try and share with you and not just for the compensation I receive. All of my family participates when it’s #whatscooking time!
